Mathura - Lord Krishna's Birth Place
Lord Krishna’s abode Mathura is a famous pilgrimage destination and a very ancient city. The place finds mention in Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavat Purana. Mathura´s strategic location meant it remained one of the most visited places of India for long. Initially, it was a key place for trade and a chief meeting spot for various cultures. For about 3000 years, Mathura remained a great centre of cultures and civilizations.

Mathura is considered holy by not only the Hindus but also the Buddhists and the Jains. Mathura was also one of the two spots where the statues of Lord Buddha was made, the other being Gandhara (Afghanistan). Actually, the Mathura School of Arts that flourished for about 1200 years was much famed throughout the world.

Attractions 
Mathura boasts of many tourist spots, mainly temples and ghats, which much enchant the travelers. Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple, Jama Maszid, Vishram Ghat, Gita Mandir, Government Museum, Gokul…these are just some of the many key attractions of the place.

Krishna Janmabhoomi is the place at Mathura where Krishna was born. Dwarkadhish Temple is a beautiful 1814- built temple. At the time of Holi, Diwali and Janmashtami, the Dwarkadhish Temple is lavishly decorated. Jama Maszid that has four minarets and bright color mosaic is a stunning 1661-built mosque. Vishram Ghat is the place where Lord Krishna is believed to have taken rest after killing the evil Kansa.

Gita Mandir is a splendid temple much popular for elaborate temple carvings and striking paintings. The Government Museum is a wonderful museum. It boasts of Gupta and Kushan artifacts of 400 BC to 1200 AD period. And, Gokul is the spot where Krishna was raised.
