Modeled on the famous Big Ben Clock Tower of London and designed by Sir George Scott, an English architect of repute, the Rajabai Clock Tower is built using Gothic and Venetian styles of architecture.
It had taken nine years (1869-1878) to construct this amazingly beautiful monument, at a cost of rupees two lakhs. It’s named after Rajabai--the mother of a broker Premchand Roychand who contributed funds for the tower’s construction. Incidentally, the same broker founded the Bombay Stock Exchange, yet another famous landmark of the Mumbai City.
The magnificent Rajabai Tower, which, strangely, is with adorned oriental figures, has, perhaps, one of the best stain glass windows in Asia. The magnificent University Library of the Mumbai University is located under the tower. The tower has a spiral staircase which now is closed for the public as many people committed suicide by hurling themselves off from the top of the tower.
Earlier, throughout the day, the clock tower chimed about 16 tunes including “Rule Britannia” and “God Save the King”. Presently, the Rajabai Clock Tower plays a single tune throughout the day--after every 15 minutes.
