It was modeled on the wonderful Taj Mahal though it could not match the grandeur and beauty of the wonder that is Taj. However, this does not, in any manner, lessen the appeal or the magic of the stunning Victoria Memorial which has a unique charm of its own.
Built in the memory of the Queen Victoria by Lord Curzon (1899-1905), and designed by Sir William Emerson, Victoria Memorial is a striking amalgamation of the European and Mughal architectures. The foundation stone of this colonial monument was laid by King George V in 1906 and inaugurated by King Edward VIII in 1921.
At the apex of the dome of the Victoria Memorial, is the statue of a 5-meter tall black bronze angle, holding a bugle in her hand.
The garden surrounding the memorial is beautiful and much attracts the visitors especially the city dwellers who revel in the serene beauty of the gardens. The Victoria Garden has wonderful statues of Queen Victoria, Lord Bentinck and Lord Ripon.
Other attraction of the memorial is its museum. The Victoria Museum has some rare pictures of early Kolkata, guns captured at the Battle of Plassey, portraits and busts of key personalities of British rulers including Queen Mary, King George V and Queen Victoria, apart from some other attractions which much fascinates the visitors.
Victoria Memorial remains open on all week days--except Mondays.
