EcoTourism in Goa - An abundance of birds can
be found all over Goa and visitors will notice a few about town and in
the various temple grounds. This large and diverse population can
survive because of the varied habitat offered by the state, including
shrubs, tracks and dense forests which are ideal for breeding.
Common varieties of birds seen in Goa include four different species of
eagle, as well as other birds of prey such as Kites, Buzzards, Kestrels,
and Ospreys. There are also five types of Pigeon, six types of Doves,
five varieties of Cuckoo, six types of Kingfisher, and another six types
of Woodpeckers.
It is not difficult to discover the varied bird life that Goa has to
offer and an early morning or evening spent beside one of the rivers
will reveal an amazing number of unusual species. Particular sites of
interest include Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary on Chorao Island, the
wetlands at Carambolim and Shiroda. For seabirds, the Morjim beach is
the recommended place to go.
