Kathak is one of the eight Indian Classical Dances. It was originated in North India. Kathak derived its name from the Sanskrit word ‘Katha’ which means story and Kathak means who tells the stories. This implies the classical dance kathak is medium to tell a story. . Kathak dance of India recites religious and mythological tales with music, mime and dance. The dance form Kathak was originated by the nomadic bards known as Kathaks or story tellers. These bards used to perform in the temple courtyards and village squares. They were specialized in recounting mythological and moral tales from the sculptures, and embellished their recitals with hand gestures and facial expressions.
Kathak Mahotsav is one of the India’s most prestigious dance festivals. Kathak Dance Festival is organized every year in October at New Delhi. The Kathak Mahotsav in the capital is organized by Kathak Kendra, a leading institution of Kathak Dance in India. Well established and voluntary dancers from all over India perform in Kathak Mahotsav. One can witness both solo and group dance performances of Kathak by renowned dancers.
