Jharkhand Wildlife - Palamu National Park
Palamu National Park – – also called the Betla National Park-- is located in the Daltongunj district and is one of the most excellent national parks of the north-east. Spread over an area of 1026 sq km, the Palamu National Park is also a Tiger Reserve. In fact, the world’s first tiger census was enumerated at Palamu way back in 1932. It is also one of the earliest of the nine tiger reserves of India which was brought under the Project Tiger scheme in 1974 to protect the endangered animals.

Koel and Burha rivers flow trough the scenic landscapes of the Palamu National Park. The park is dominated with sal and mahua trees and has the ruins of an ancient fort inside that adds to its tourist appeal. Palamu is surrounded with tribal populations consisting of mainly the Munda and Oraon tribes.

Among the many species of wild animals, elephants, tigers, deer, wild boars, and leopards are the pride of the national park that also boasts of an amazing variety of birds including white-necked storks, crested serpent eagles, forest owls, doves and papiha, among the others.

Daltongunj town is the main entry point to the national park and is 170 km away from Ranchi--the state capital.
