| Unique Auroville |
Auroville has received unanimous endorsement of the General Assembly of the UNESCO in 1966, 1968 and 1970. The city is an exceptional venture. It strives to be a model city where people from all communities, from across the globe, will rise over their many differences and live in perfect harmony as part of the same community.
Presently, the city spreads over 50 square kilometers and is populated by about 1700 people from 30 countries, even though it can accommodate about 50000 people.
A circular cover of green surrounds the city. Matri Mandir (Temple of the Mother) marks the township’s center, and serves as the town’s spiritual center. The key feature of the structure is a 30-meter high globe. Auroville is divided into industrial, cultural, residential and international zones with two separate areas earmarked as Green area and Peace area.
Over the past years, Auroville has developed into a wonderful community with varied activities that include, among the others, environmental regeneration, alternative energy, organic farming, village development, music, theatre and art.
Even though a few restraints exist, most of these activities are much successful making Auroville a truly ideal, modern township of India. And this much attracts the visitors to Auroville.
