The most densely populated state of India; West Bengal is one of the well-known Indian states and located in the eastern part of the country. It stretches from Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south. The state shares its borders with Bangladesh, Nepal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Assam, Sikkim, Bhutan and Jharkhand.
With a total geographical area of 88752 sq km, it occupies 2.7% of India’s total geographical area. Ganges is the main river of the state which is divided into 19 administrative districts. Bengali is the main language of West Bengal. Other key languages of the state are -- Hindi, English and Nepali.
West Bengal is much known for its rich history (stretching for more than 4000 years), culture and fierce sense of pride and independence (it played the most important role in India’s freedom movement). The state is also much known for Darjeeling Tea, Bengali culture, Shakti worship, and Rasogulla (delicious sweet cheese balls soaked in sugar syrup).
The state boasts of several attractions –- both natural and man-made such as Darjeeling, Kolkata, and Sunderbans. Darjeeling, the most famous hill station of the state is an enchanting hill destination and a leading tourist attraction. Kolkata, the state capital, is one of the four biggest metropolitan cities of India. And, the Sunderbans, the chief wildlife attraction of the state, is an amazing wildlife destination with one of the largest population of the Royal Bengal Tigers in the world.
