The former capital of the British India, and the present capital of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, Kolkata, till 2001 Calcutta, derives its name from Kalilkata. The City of Joy, Kolkata was earlier also known as Kalikshetra – the land of the Goddess Kali. Kolkata is the second largest city of India (next only to Mumbai) and the 8th largest metropolitan area in the world. Located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, Kolkata is the eastern India’s hub of education, industries, science, literature, culture and politics. The city is also a favorite platform for those involved with leftist and trade union movements.
The Gateway to India till 1912, and the Indian sub-continent’s New York, Kolkata is a mammoth commercial city with big industrial plants and corporate houses. The city is also a huge and interesting melting pot of several cultures and people from various regions of India and abroad (Nepal, China and Bangladesh).
